Butler’s Bangladesh dreaming big

Yangon: Bangladesh are chasing a historic first after a dazzling 7-0 win against Bahrain in their AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026™ Qualifiers Group C opener on Sunday.

Yet to feature in the Finals, Peter Butler’s side are showing that things could be different this time around with only two more matches standing in their way of a place at Australia 2026.

The former Liberia head coach put the big-margin win down to the hard work put in during training but warned his players against complacency for Wednesday’s meeting with Myanmar - who are 73 places above them in the FIFA Women’s World Ranking.

"We had good preparation and the result showed that,” said Butler. “We've got a really, really good work ethic within the camp and the girls applied themselves brilliantly.

"There has been some criticism of us not scoring goals but I always knew goals were going to come, especially in this team when you've got players such as Tohura (Khatun), Shamsunnahar Jr, Ritu (Porna), Monika (Chakma).

"Myanmar will be a completely different challenge. They are perhaps technically better than us and they will have the backing of the home crowd but we will be ready for the challenge."
